Kulakane 302 is a 2-bedroom, 2-bath beachfront vacation condominium in west Maui with a spectacular 180-degree view of the ocean and neighboring islands. Located in a low-rise condo complex just north of Kaanapali in the quiet Honokowai district, it is very close to some of the best restaurants, shopping, and golf on the islands. The Honokowai reef (directly offshore from the condo) offers excellent snorkeling and diving. Kaanapali Beach, Kapalua Beach and Napili Bay, each often included in "Top 10" lists, are within 3 miles. Lahaina (just 10 minutes away from the condo) is a base of operations for nearly all Maui water activities (SCUBA/SNUBA, surfing, snorkeling, kayaking, parasailing, day trips to other islands, and more). The condominium is available year-round for vacation rental. A 10% discount is available for first-time guests.

The Condo
Kulakane 302 is a 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom oceanfront condominium located in a low-rise (3 stories) beachfront complex in upper west Maui and available for vacation rental. The Kulakane condominium complex has a total of 42 units. The building is oriented parallel to the beach, so that each condo is about 50 feet from the water’s edge. Each unit has a private lanai (balcony) with 180-degree ocean view including views of neighboring islands Lanai and Molokai. The condo is available for rent through the on-site rental office, but a referral from us will get you a 10% discount year-round (even during high season, when no other discounts are available). The 10% owner's discount can be combined with the other discounts listed on the rates page.
Each unit of the Kulakane complex is individually owned, and therefore furnished and decorated differently. Our condominium has been remodeled several times, most recently a kitchen remodel in July 2007. There is a King-size bed in the upstairs bedroom and a Queen in the downstairs bedroom. It is ideal for two couples or two singles vacationing together in Maui.
High-definition, flat panel televisions with digital cable channels are in the living room and upstairs bedroom of the condominium. There's a VCR/DVD player in the living room. The stereo system in the living room has a CD player with an iPod dock. The system will charge your iPod while it is playing, and allow you to use the remote control to select playlists and songs. It will also play MP3 songs recorded on CD-R or a flash drive.
Stay connected while you're on vacation
Unique to our vacation condominium is a built-in office in the upstairs loft area, with two desks, an Internet-connected computer and printer. (Perfect if you have to attend to a few business matters while on vacation.) Microsoft Office is installed on the computer. Bring your files on a CD or flash drive, and you are ready to work. Connect your digital camera to the USB port, review your wonderful Maui pictures and email them to your envious friends back home.
For guests who bring a laptop or other wireless Internet device (e.g., iPhone), there is broadband wireless Internet access (WiFi 802.11g) throughout the Kulakane complex provided free for our guests. It even works by the pool. (Many hotels charge up to $12 per day for Internet access.) This makes it entirely feasible to surf the Internet and watch the surf at the same time. Or participate in a web conference while watching whales. Many of the activities available on Maui can be booked on line.
The kitchen is fully equipped with coffee maker, microwave, ice maker, rice cooker, all cooking utensils and the all-important blender for making your favorite tropical beverage.
Location
The Kulakane condo complex is located on the beach in upper west Maui in the quiet Honokowai district, about halfway between the resort areas of Kaanapali and Kapalua.
Honokowai is peaceful, yet the condominium is close to everything in west Maui. There are a number of restaurants and markets in Honokowai and Kahana within walking distance from the Kulakane. Distances are short in upper west Maui; some of the best golf, snorkeling, shopping and restaurants on the island are just a few minutes away.
Lahaina is about 5 miles from the condo. Kapalua is about 3 miles north; Kaanapali, Napili and Kahana are within 2 miles. Kaanapali and Kapalua are two of the best golf resorts in Hawaii. Lahaina, historically a whaling village, now has the best shopping on the island. Enjoy the dozens of clothing shops, world-class art galleries, and unique gift stores. Options for waterfront dining abound, including american, italian, asian, fresh(!) seafood, and many others. Lahaina harbor is a base of operations for most water adventures offered on Maui, including snorkeling, parasailing, SCUBA or SNUBA diving expeditions, day trips to neighborhing islands, sailing, and others.
The western side of Maui (which includes the area known as "south Maui") is the drier, sunnier side. Temperatures in west Maui are typically similar to those on the east and north sides of the island, but the humidity is usually lower and the clouds less frequent. This is due to the "rain shadow" effect. Easterly trade winds (blowing from the east) are forced upward over the mountains, causing the air to cool and form clouds on the east slopes and near the peaks. There, moisture is removed from the air in the form of rain. As the air crosses the peaks and descends on the west side of Maui, it is warmed again - minus the moisture that was lost to precipitation. West Maui is sunnier than the windward side of the island, and the relative humidity in west Maui is sometimes 10% lower.
Beautiful Views, Gentle Surf
Two of the primary advantages of upper west Maui are the neighboring islands of Molokai and Lanai. The presence of Maui's sister islands just 10 miles offshore benefits us in several ways. First, the islands are themselves beautiful to look at. As the sun moves through the sky, the pattern of shadows on the green hillsides is continually changing. Another benefit provided by the neighboring islands is shelter from ocean swells and waves approaching the island from the north and west. For this reason, the surf from Lahaina north is usually gentle, especially in the summer. (Of course, caution in and around the ocean is always prudent, and dangerous surf can occur anywhere on Hawaiian shores under the right conditions.)
Good Surfing Nearby
Although the surf in Honokowai is usually gentle, good surfing spots are nearby. The less-protected beaches south of Lahaina and north of Kapalua provide excellent surfing conditions during much of the year. Honolua Bay (about 5 miles north of the condo) will challenge even the best surfers when a north swell is running. "S Turns" (in Kahana, about 1 mile north of the condo) and Laniupoko (just south of Lahaina) have forgiving breaks. Surfing lessons are available in Lahaina from several surfing schools.
The Best Sunsets
Yet another benefit provided by Lanai and Molokai is that they make the best sunsets. Why? Simply put, clouds increase the colors and interest of a sunset. Clouds typically form over tropical islands as the trade winds pass over them.
